Wood screws

Wood screws are screws with threads that are utilized for connecting pieces of wood together. They feature a pointed tip for easy insertion into the wood, a threaded body for secure fastening, and a head for turning using a screwdriver or power drill. Different Materials Used to Make Wood Screws


Steel Wood Screws are widely used and versatile fasteners. Usually crafted from toughened steel, they offer remarkable strength and longevity. Typically, these screws are three to four inches long with half-threaded shanks. This design allows the screw to pull the top piece towards the components it is fastened to, preventing it from getting stuck. For most non-structural woodwork, these wood screws are suitable.

These screws feature self-drilling tips and larger heads. The self-drilling tip prevents the lower piece from splitting, while the larger head prevents over-tightening and potential damage to the upper piece.


Structural Screws are capable of firmly attaching large pieces of lumber and other materials. They are similar to standard wood screws, but larger in size, resembling lag screws. When utilized correctly, these screws offer exceptional strength, typically reserved for applications with high potential for damage. Commonly employed in projects like deck and playground construction, structural screws provide builders with the assurance of a durable and secure structure.



Understanding Wood Screw Terminology


Here are a few terms you'll need to know: 

  • The screw gauge indicates the thickness of the shank or the minor diameter. The major diameter corresponds to the shank's diameter, including the thread. Both are significant, but the minor diameter influences the screw's strength. A higher number signifies a thicker screw.


  • When considering the length of a wood screw, it is usually measured in inches. Your screw should be of sufficient length to ensure that there is an equal amount of shaft in both the top and bottom boards without the tip protruding through the opposite side.


  • Pitch of a wood screw refers to the screw's threads per inch. A softwood screw will have fewer threads per inch or less pitch, and a hardwood screw will have more threads per inch or higher pitch. This isn't always expressed as a number printed on the box, but it will typically say whether the screw is made for softwood or hardwood.
